The 5-Minute Freelancer Q&A #27 — Steve Burgess

  • Thanks Steve. I enjoyed your column — as I consistently do your writing, too. And I have always loved your sense of humour —- which I first discovered when you used to do your TV show (any chance of a comeback there?). Three questions: How often do you write from your own inspiration and then set out to sell the piece, as opposed to writing to pre-set directions or commissions ? Second, how has the arrival of the web and associated opportunities for on-line research, blogging etc. affected your approach to your work? Third, do you find that there are many opportunities to earn money doing editing or proofing ?

  • Thanks Gordon! I am quite sure CBC will put @the end back on the air at the first sign of a torch-bearing mob storming their gates, an event I expect any moment now.

Pitch vs. assignment–I am bad at pitches and also lazy, which is a perfect combo for awaiting assignments instead. You can even wait for them while horizontal which is great. But it depends on the publication. Most of the stuff I’ve written for Swerve has been my idea. Most of the stuff I’ve written for BC Business has been their idea. There are exceptions but that’s generally the case.

Editing and proofing–not an area I’ve ever explored I’m afraid. I would think it’s more active market for manuscripts rather than magazine pieces though.
