Canadian freelancers turn to the US market to secure higher-paying gigs

  • Great summary. My experience with American magazines has been generally positive, but there are some caveats to mention. First off, American editors are generally VERY approachable to pitches. But if a story isn’t immediately assigned, you need to badger them, like you do any editor. Secondly, the higher up you go in the ecosystem, to, say, A list magazines like the ones owned by Conde Nast, you might be dazzled by getting $1.50 per word USD or whatever, but they make you work for it. Get ready for lots of fix notes, etc. Many of these magazines have big mastheads, and those editors need to keep busy somehow. Meticulous fact checking is the rule, and at the end of the day, the #1 rule of freelancing applies and that’s ‘It’s their magazine and your story. And your story must fit their magazine and its brand.”
