New Star freelance contracts raising eyebrows

Comment

  • I am an editorial illustrator and I was sent the “new artist’s agreement” by Linda Carter. I have done work for the Toronto Star for over 20 years and have never had a formal agreement with them- just the tacit understanding that they would pay me first publication rights and would contact and pay me for any additional use of my work.

I am with an artist’s cooperative in the US that sells online work to a host of newspapers. When the Star downloads a piece, quite often it shows up in their moneyville website as well without them paying the additional fee.

This agreement is offensive- it suggests that the Star can use my work as they see fit and however often they want without additional payment.

The Toronto Star prides itself on protecting the little guy but then drafts something as draconian as this. Commissioned work is getting thinner every year and I don’t want to lose a client but I serious reservations about signing this agreement.

We all need to speak out loudly because this simply is not right.
